Welcome to POP SHAPED. Pull up a chair and make yourself at home.
Here you can browse the graphic design portfolio of Micheál O'Dwyer, showing a range of projects including work on brand identity, editorial design, packaging design, typography, photography, web design, digital imagemaking, and printmaking.
I have recently completed a two year diploma course in Graphic Design at Dublin Institute of Design, covering Concept Development, Branding, Editorial Design, Printmaking, Digital Image Making, Photography and Packaging Design.
These are some samples of the work that I completed for this course.
Brand and Promote a Café
Working from visual information gathered during a field trip, develop a name, visual identity, company logo, stationary suite and promotional poster for a café.
Given a classic typeface, we had to design a poster to 'promote' it.
I was given Univers, and used the fact that it is available in so many different weights (denoted by numbers) to build shapes using the numbers. Two designs were explored, both on the Swiss theme (Swiss army knife and Swiss flag), where the motif in each case is made from the different typeface weights.
Photo Montage/Macro Photography
Design a poster for a classic movie, using a photomontage of images which sum up your chosen subject. You must use two or more of your own photographs in the composition.
Design a printed advertisement for an arts event, using macro photography and typographic elements.
Digital Imagemaking and Editorial Design
Create your own digital images and design, plan and create a professional high quality 16 page travel magazine.
All illustrations were completed in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and the magazine was put together in InDesign. Photoshop layers were created to give pages a textured look.
Select a music track with interesting lyrics, then design an album cover using skills learned in printmaking class to accompany this track
I chose Neutral Milk Hotel's Holland 1945 as my track, and createde a gatefold sleeve album cover (4 sides) with an embossed inner sleeve. An accompanying embossed CD case contained a folded double-sided print and printed inner sleeve. Front cover mixed linocut with etching, back cover is an etching on perspex printed using Charbonell etching ink. Inner images are primarily linocut, with some screen printing.
Food Packaging and Design
Design packaging for both a wrap and a cake, using cartonboard as the predominant material. The packaging is to be designed to protect the product, to allow the customers visibility of the product, and to be aimed at the 25-40 market. The packaging is to be tamper evident, yet easily opened, and has to be easily recyclable.
Pop Shaped is the one-man design company nom-de-plume of Micheál O'Dwyer. This website was set up to showcase the portfolio work that I produced while studying graphic design at Dublin Institute of Design.
My main interest in graphic design lies in the classic stylistic elements from the mid twentieth century -- encompassing silkscreen printing, classical typography, and hand lettering -- combined with digital image making.
When not designing, I work as a technical analyst for an IT company and split my time between Dublin and Providence, Rhode Island.
